Stateliners Car Show 2010

Road Rage Dozens of classic vehicles lined Municipal Park on Aug. 28 during the Stateliners Car Club's Fourth Annual Car Show. The showcase was a collaboration between the Town of Anthony and local car clubs to raise funds for various organizations, including Anthony's Municipal Park Improvement Project and the Children's Miracle Network.

"The mayor has been gracious enough to provide the park for us to hold this event and in return, we give a percentage back to the Town of Anthony, as well as to other charities," Fred Levario, member of the Stateliners, said.

Levario added that other nonprofits that will receive funds from registration fees and donations are La Casa Inc., Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, and the Catholic Church in Anthony.

The show included a total of 72 cars, according to Stateliners member Ramon Franco, who also indicated that this was an increase from last year's event. Other local car clubs were invited to participate as well.

"We basically go around to benefit car shows, to raise money for kids," said Saul Anchondo, founder of Prestige Car Club. The club started in Anthony in 1988 and has been growing ever since."We have 10 [members] here, and we started another chapter in Los Lunas where we have 12. And we're getting ready to start one in Dallas, Texas, where we have five members."

Although many of the people present for the event were familiar with car-club culture, others enjoyed their first time at a car show. "I think it's cool,"Yvonne Torres said. "This is actually my first car show and it's pretty interesting to get to see all the cars, the different years, models."

Torres added that it's very good of the car clubs to donate their profits. "Everything helps right now," she said.

Mayor Art Franco, who started the partnership with the Stateliners four years ago, said that the event gets a little bigger every year. "It's good for the community because it's something for the community to do, but at the same time it serves a purpose to raise money for the park and other charitable organizations. Every year it gets a little bigger, every year it just grows."
